Levels of Dental Sedation
First, when choosing a sedation technique, it’s good to know about the levels of sedation that can be reached:
- Minimal sedation: The lowest level of sedation; you are awake and aware, but you feel deeply relaxed.
- Moderate sedation/conscious sedation: A deeper level of sedation where you may have delayed reaction times and slur your words. Your treatment may not be remembered clearly.
- Deep sedation: This is the deepest level of conscious sedation; you may be on the edge of sleep, or you may snooze, but you can still be awakened.
- General anesthesia: You are asleep through your treatment; you are unable to be awakened until after the procedure.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide sedation is often associated with a euphoric sensation. The patient is awake and responsive. It’s easy to administer and the effects wear off quickly, so patients can leave the office on their own safely.
Most patients will have little memory of the appointment and doze through it. The duration of the effect varies with dosage. Your dentist will discuss the right medication and dosage for you. Assistance returning home after treatment will most likely be required.
Also known as moderate conscious sedation, IV sedation is the most effective sedation method available. During an IV sedation, the dentist administers the medication through an IV (intravenous) line. The strength and delivery is entirely managed by the dentist.
An IV sedation is also called “deep conscious sedation” and can reduce anxiety and discomfort significantly, especially those with extreme fear. Patients enjoy a profound amnesia effect, resulting in little to no memory of the dental procedure.
