Parenting has enough challenges without wondering when they should see various healthcare providers. Each child is a little bit different, but for a child's first dental exam, the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) recommends within 6 months of the first tooth coming in or by 1 year.

Once your child has seen your family dentist for their first visit, the dentist can advise you how often to bring them back. Let's take a quick look at dental exams for kids and why they're essential.

Dental Exams & Cleaning

The dentist may take a slightly different approach when performing a child's exam compared to an adult's, but the goal is still the same. They are looking for signs of decay or disease that could cause future problems.

Your child's dentist might even recommend a filling for a "baby tooth" if they find signs of tooth decay. A child's primary teeth could stay in their mouth until 12, and tooth decay cannot be allowed to remain that long.

When Should a Child Start Seeing a Dentist?

Based on the CDA's recommendation of a child's first visit being six months after the first tooth's eruption, the average child should see the dentist for the first time around nine months old. Even if they are slower to get their primary teeth, the association still recommends a first visit when the child turns one.

How Often Should They Go?

After your child begins seeing the dentist, the CDA recommends that they continue visiting the dentist every six months for a dental exam and cleaning. X-rays aren't typically needed every six months, especially in a child. But if your family dentist notices any potential issues, they may recommend x-rays.

A male dentist is examining a boy's teeth at the dental clinic. The boy's mouth is wide open while the dentist is checking if the boy's teeth are okay

Importance of Regular Dental Visits

Dealing with tooth issues before they become problematic is a significant reason to see the dentist regularly. Let's look at a few specific reasons for your children to see the dentist.

Cavities

Cavities can happen. When your child's baby teeth start coming in, it's not always easy to clean them. It could be tempting to leave them because your child will lose those teeth anyway.

However, they could have those teeth for several years, and the tooth decay cannot be allowed to remain. But if your child sees the dentist throughout their childhood, the chances of the dentist catching tooth decay before it becomes a cavity is higher too.

Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is a common oral condition. Fortunately, gum disease can typically be dealt with by improving oral hygiene. Some common signs of gum disease include swollen and puffy gums, bad breath, or bleeding gums.

Seeing the dentist every six months is an excellent tool for preventing gum disease from progressing and leading to more severe complications.

Proper Oral Development

Your child's early years are filled with development in many areas of their bodies. Their mouths and teeth are no exception. But if something isn't developing correctly in the mouth, it may not be immediately noticeable.

Regular dental exams are a great way to ensure your child's mouth is developing as it should be. Your dentist can discuss any concerns you may have

Questions

When it comes to taking care of our bodies, we must rely on experts for information. Typically being a parent comes with a lot of questions. Seeing your family dentist regularly allows you or your child to ask any questions you have about taking care of your teeth.

Plus, helping your child build a relationship with their dentist benefits them later in life.

Book Your Child Their First Dentist Appointment

When your child sees the dentist for the first time mostly depends on when their teeth start popping out. Our team at Skypointe Dental is ready to partner with you and ensure your child's mouth gets the best start in life possible.

1) Dental Crowns In One Day. - Really? - Yes, The Same Day!

One of your teeth might need a dental crown to repair any damage. Dental crowns are tooth-shaped covers that can disguise a blemished tooth. A dental crown is often applied to fill in a cavity, for broken or worn-down tooth, or when a tooth has cracked and requires more support. A crown may also be applied as an extra barrier for a dental bridge.

Dental crowns are made from different materials including:

  • Metal
  • Resin
  • Ceramic
  • Porcelain
  • Zirconia

or a material that's a mixture of porcelain and metal that's often referred to as porcelain-fused-to-metal.

Today, a popular choice is the CEREC crown. This type of crown is usually made of strong ceramics and is designed, created, and installed using computer-assisted technology. What does CEREC stand for? The abbreviation stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. How does it work? A same-day dental crown procedure, will get you the crownthe same day! You can go home within the course of a single afternoon. (Now available at SkyPointe Dental!)

Looking for cheap dental crowns? Our dental crowns are often more affordable than those by most dentists, but we don’t compromise on quality or craftsmanship. The truth is: Cheap dental crowns will not provide you with the necessary quality to guarantee proper dental care.

As with any dental procedure, the costs for dental crown treatment can vary based on:

  • procedures covered by your dental insurance
  • your dentist’s experience level
  • region of the country in which you live

Some dental insurance plans may cover the cost of a crown
, while others may only pay for part of the cost. The result could depend on whether your dental insurance plan will classify the crown as medically necessary or for aesthetic purposes.

We always work one-on-one to make sure every patient feels confident throughout every step of dental crown (Calgary NE) treatment. That way, we can ensure you have beautiful and long-lasting results that stay fixed in place, with affordable pricing. Make a dental crown appointment at SkyPointe Dental Clinic Calgary NE.

A Dental Crown Doesn't Have to Cost You An Arm And A Leg

Rather than wait for as long as two weeks for your new crown, you can get a CEREC crown at our dental office, and nobody would know that your tooth is hiding a crown. A CEREC crown tends to be more sturdy and resists abrasion, making them more likely to last. Additionally, this type of crown is metal-free and looks more natural than most other crown types.

Choose a reliable restoration of your tooth with a crown installed using our CEREC system. Yes, SAME DAY DENTAL CROWNS! Now that's convenient. Available at SkyPointe Dental.

Seniors can have dental conditions that arise from other health problems they are facing. For example, if they have arthritic hands, then oral hygiene may suffer as it is more challenging to brush and floss daily.

Seniors are often on multiple medications for other health problems which can give them dry mouth, or sensitive gums, and this puts them at greater risk for gum disease. For seniors, regular checkups and teeth cleaning is vital for them to maintain their oral health. Finding a dentist who understand seniors may be a challenge in Calgary NE.

Seniors & Oral Hygiene

Seniors should brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss at least once a day. Rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash once or twice a day is also highly recommended. Seniors often have aging yellow teeth, and they can have their teeth whitened to remove stains and brighten their enamel.

As for toothbrushes, seniors have many electric toothbrushes to choose from and newer models have built in timers and pressure sensors, and soft bristles are best for fragile gums. Electric toothbrushes are especially helpful for seniors with compromised hand agility.

Periodontal Disease

The most common dental issue seniors face is periodontal (gum) disease. Without adequate oral hygiene, plaque and tartar build up causing bacteria to attack the gums. Left unaddressed, periodontal disease can result in the loss of teeth. If seniors have difficulty chewing, this has a negative impact on their overall health as they will not necessarily choose the most nutritious foods, and resort to ones that don’t require much chewing.

Another problem with plaque build-up for seniors is that pneumonia is the leading cause of death in seniors and the bacteria responsible for pneumonia is commonly found in the dental plaque of seniors.

No senior should have difficulty getting excellent and affordable dental care

common dental issues affecting seniors

At Skypointe Dental, our highly trained dentists have a great deal of experience in treating seniors’ for dental issues. We take special care to find out all the overall health conditions our senior patients face and what medications they are taking, and for how long.

Our dentists can treat periodontal disease, and recommend dental restorations, dentures, or partial dentures where they are the best solution for patients whose teeth are severely compromised. We keep a close watch on the relationship between our patients’ overall health and their oral health.

Seniors under Skypointe Dental’s care are treated using the latest technologies which are designed to be less invasive and to minimize pain.

The Cost of Seniors’ Dental Care

In addition, Skypointe Dental has recognized the concerns seniors have about the cost of oral care. In fact, we have teamed up with AgeCare Skypointe to provide residents with dental cleanings in the facility.

Skypointe Dental offers Pay 360 for financing dental care, and refers patients to the Alberta Dental Service Corporation which administers the Dental Assistance for Seniors Program (DASP). It is an income-based program for low to moderate income seniors which provides assistance for basic dental services.

The Skypointe team also knows that seniors may have cognitive impairments, mobility problems and they are experienced in providing dental hygiene and treatments with sensitivity and understanding of seniors’ needs.

Crowns, Bridges, Root Canals

Many patients require crowns, bridges, or root canals to address advanced decay in a tooth, or gaps from missing teeth. Dental crowns strengthen a damaged tooth and can also fix a misshapen or crooked tooth.

With bridges, we use our Digital Smile Design to show you what your new smile will look like before we proceed. We create bridges to stop remaining teeth from moving into the empty spaces created by a missing tooth or multiple teeth.

Fillings, Removing Teeth & Wisdom Teeth

Most tooth decay can be addressed with a filling, but if the decay is advanced or the tooth has been damaged, it may need to be removed. We also remove wisdom teeth. For fillings, we use safe, white fillings, and can remove old amalgam mercury fillings and replace them with white fillings.

Whatever your family’s dental health needs, we are experienced and prepared to address each issue with the utmost care to make you comfortable in the process.

Here are three easy steps to receive treatment with Skypointe Dental:

  • Let’s meet
  • Let’s create a plan for treatment

If you are looking for a family dentist in Calgary NE, you might be wondering how you should go about choosing the right dentist for you. What is most important to your family? Location? Types of services? Affordability? There are many options and finding the right family dentist might be a challenge.

What does “family dentist” mean?

Family dentistry is sometimes called “general dentistry” and it includes all the major services we associate with a dentist: teeth cleaning, x-rays, fillings, kids’ dentistry, dental crowns and bridges, root canals, tooth removal, wisdom teeth extraction, white fillings, missing teeth, bad breath, bleeding gums, and jaw pain.

Many family dentists also offer a range of other dental services such as cosmetic dentistry (veneers, teeth whitening), orthodontics, dental implants, dentures, sleep apnea treatment, and TMJ treatment. When choosing a family dentist, you want to feel confident that all your family members – from children to seniors – can have their dental needs addressed.

We believe choosing a family dentist should be easy and clear

From Kids to Seniors

We like to see all our patients, and especially kids, at least twice a year for check-ups and cleanings. We can identify small problems with baby teeth before they become bigger problems in permanent teeth.

For seniors, we have partnered with Agecare Skypointe to offer cleanings and other care. We understand that medications, cognitive impairments, and arthritis can make oral care more challenging for seniors. We are able to provide our senior patients with the treatments they need to preserve their teeth.

Many people feel self-conscious about their smile.

They’re embarrassed by their crowded, crooked teeth – so much so, that some even avoid smiling.

Invisible braces can provide people with a beautiful, straight smile, increasing their self-confidence.

Unfortunately, some avoid investing in adult braces. The cost turns them off. They don’t feel they have enough time. Or some have had bad experiences in the dental office.

Thankfully, there’s a Skyview dentist who understands what patients are going through – and he can offer them an affordable, relatively pain-free option for a beautiful smile.

Dr. Patel – A Cornerstone Dentist Who Understands

Dr. Jay Patel knows what his patients are going through because he’s been there himself.

When he was young, Dr. Patel’s teeth were “all over the place.” Eventually, he was able to straighten his teeth with orthodontic treatment and has a smile he’s proud to show off.

Dr. Patel is a Cornerstone dentist that believes a beautiful smile is something that everyone should have access to, which is why he offers adult braces at an affordable price.

Over the years, he’s helped hundreds of patients correct their crooked teeth with invisible braces. As a certified SureSmile provider, he fixes not only the appearance of his patients’ teeth but functional issues, too. Better function helps reduce the symptoms of TMJ disorder and the risk of cracked, chipped, or broken teeth.

A Redstone dentist, Dr. Patel wants to help all his patients get a straighter smile so they can have more confidence and go after the career they want and live a life they love.

A Country Hills Dentist with a Plan: The Best Types of Invisible Braces for Adults

When patients visit Dr. Patel, he starts by creating a clear plan.

1. Exam and Consultation

During an exam, Dr. Patel reviews the needs of the patient to see if Invisalign invisible aligners like Invisalign are the best option.

Invisalign vs. braces – what’s the difference? Invisalign consists of clear aligners that are changed every few weeks. Every new aligner helps shift the teeth, and patients are often able to get faster results.

However, there are other types of dental braces for adults, such as SureSmile, a process that uses 3D imaging and robotics to create a straighter smile. The software helps the dentist calculate how much a patient’s teeth need to move and creates invisible aligners within those specifications.

At a free consultation, Dr. Patel reviews the patient’s orthodontic options, as well as the timeline and cost of each option. Together, the patient and their Cityscape dentist can decide which route to take.

2. Learn About the Cost and Timeline

How much do braces cost? This is one of the top questions Dr. Patel hears from his patients. And it’s totally understandable. Most people don’t have a lot of disposable income, especially after struggling through the pandemic economy of COVID-19.

With the SureSmile system, Dr. Patel can create an exact timeline, so patients know what type of time investment they’ll need to make. Having a definite plan helps patients to feel more comfortable about moving forward with invisible braces.

3. Get a Beautiful Smile at an Affordable Price

Because Invisalign and SureSmile move crooked teeth faster than traditional braces, the cost of treatment is less. Additionally, the number of visits needed is reduced.

Patients worry that fixing their smile will be expensive. They worry they’ll look and feel like an insecure teenager if they invest in traditional braces.

Another concern is that they’ll spend a lot of time in the dental chair when they could spend that time working or being with their family.

With the latest orthodontic innovations, Dr. Patel can provide patients with a more predictable timeline and faster results.

With orthodontic treatment from Dr. Patel, patients achieve the smile they’ve always wanted in a timely manner and with minimal appointments. They don’t look or feel like they’re wearing braces, so that added insecurity goes out the window. Patients can brush, floss, and eat like normal as well.

Worried About the Cost and Time Investment? SureSmile Is the Solution

Though patients are unhappy with their crooked teeth, many are hesitant to take action to achieve a better smile.

Cost and time are the two major deterrents. They’re worried about the cost of dental braces for adults. They’re worried about the many appointments involved and missing work or school, having to coordinate schedules. Many are worried about the unpredictable timeline of orthodontic care.

Thankfully, with SureSmile or Invisalign clear aligners, patients have an affordable, time-saving option to get the smile they’ve always wanted.

Worried about unpredictable timelines? Schedule a SureSmile appointment with Dr. Patel today. You’ll get a clear idea of the timelines and cost of treatment before you get started.

If you require dental work but are short on money, Dr. Patel is more than happy to work with you. Once you’re ready to address your dental needs, this is the process you’ll go through:

Before discussing treatment options, you’ll likely need to have an exam done of your mouth and teeth. This allows the team to really get down to the root of your dental problems. You may also need to have some dental x-rays done to check for any issues below your gum line.

Our Team Will Discuss Your Options

Once your dental team has all the necessary information and has had a chance to physically look in your mouth and/or at any x-rays, they’ll be able to start formulating a treatment plan.

They will then sit down with you, talk about any conditions with you at length, and explore how they can address it.

Are you happy to be hiding your smile?

hiding your smile in calgary ne

With the COVID-19 pandemic has come mandatory mask-wearing in many cities. Are you one of those people who is quite happy to be hiding your smile?

Do you have crooked teeth and a smile which makes you self-conscious? Do you hate getting photographs taken and don’t mind keeping your teeth under wraps?

Well, masks won’t be mandatory forever. Meanwhile, are you content to delay addressing your teeth issues even though they pose a health problem for you as well? Crooked teeth are harder to clean and thus are much more prone to cavities. Perhaps you are worried about how much braces cost and the time involved in getting braces.

There are several types of braces now

You have probably known people who had the metal and wire braces, and they experienced a number of problems with them. These included frequent, painful dental visits, difficulty brushing their teeth, broken wires, restrictions on what they could eat and do, and the fact that metal braces can take up to 2 years to successfully straighten teeth.

Other types of braces include “low visibility braces”, “hidden” or “lingual” braces that go behind your teeth, and then there are the clear, invisible braces known as aligners.

Patients and their parents want an option that is affordable, pain-free, and which reduces the hassle and time that traditional braces usually require. Parents also want to know that they are getting a professional they can trust whose treatment will result in a beautiful smile.

Consider SureSmile

Dr. Jay Patel believes that beautiful and affordable smiles should be accessible to everyone. He has helped hundreds of patients, and he is a certified SureSmile Aligners provider. He knows that many people need braces to fix functional problems, but even more patients could benefit from them to straighten their teeth, improve their smiles, and even the shape of their faces. He wants to help you.

What are SureSmile Aligners?

SureSmile Aligners are clear, removable plastic molds that gradually move your teeth. They are an esthetically pleasing alternative to braces, especially for minor tooth movements that improve your smile. Here is how the process works.

Dr. Patel will use a scanner to take a fast and precise 3D digital scan of your teeth. Then with special software, he will create the plan for how your teeth need to move to achieve your better smile. He creates a before and after preview so that you can see how your teeth will be aligned by the end of the process. Then your custom aligners are made using a state-of-the-art printing process that follows the digital plan.

For most adults, treatment lasts up to a year, which is about half the time traditional braces take. SureSmile Aligners are to be worn all day and you only remove them for meals and for brushing your teeth before you put them back in. Because there are no wires and brackets to get in the way of your life, you can still eat your favorite foods and play in sports activities.

Dr. Patel will see you regularly, and as your teeth slowly move, you will need a new set of liners to keep that movement going. Each new set is designed to move your teeth closer to the goal, so you will feel a little extra pressure for the first few days of each set of new liners. The best part is that your smile is slowly improving, and no one notices because the SureSmile Aligners are invisible braces!

SureSmile is An Easy Solution

Dr. Patel’s process makes it easy for you to get started with SureSmile Aligners.

  1. Come in to see us
  2. Get your free consultation and go over your options

Because SureSmile Aligners are created digitally, the whole process is faster and has a more predictable timeline.

Dr. Patel has an affordable solution for you to achieve the smile you’ve always wanted with minimal appointments. Enjoy not even looking like you are wearing braces or worrying about what you can eat or if you can play sports.

Let’s make your new smile happen!

Don’t like your smile because of crooked teeth?

Are you self-conscious about photos? You smile with your lips together? Every day when you brush your teeth and look in the mirror, you wish you liked your smile?

Is this you?

Maybe you are like many people who dislike their smiles because of crooked teeth. When you think about getting those teeth straightened, many barriers pop into your mind. Maybe someone in your family had braces. So you wonder about the cost, the pain, the bad experiences.

There is the time away from school or work, coordinating schedules, and waiting for months or even more than a year to see the results. Then there is the hygiene, brushing around braces and cutting out certain foods for a while. But the biggest one by far is still…the cost. You are worried about how much braces cost. You and your parents want an affordable and pain-free solution to straightening your teeth.

Braces vs SureSmile

More and more young people and adults are choosing SureSmile over braces. Why? Because they have many advantages. The old-style braces involved metal wires to apply pressure to move the teeth. SureSmile aligners use new digital technology which can fix more complex orthodontic cases. It gets a more precise alignment of teeth in a shorter time than most other orthodontic options, including other aligners.

SureSmile has a more predictable timeline because your dentist will use digital imaging software to design the aligners. You’ll have easier hygiene because you can still brush and floss as normal, and most people won’t even know you have them on – because they are invisible!

We believe a beautiful smile should be accessible to everyone

Dr. Patel has helped hundreds of patients. He is a certified SureSmile provider. He knows that 45% of children need braces to fix functional problems but up to 75% of children could benefit from them to straighten their teeth and improve the shape of their faces.

We’d like to start by checking up on you. How are you adjusting? As healthcare workers, we thank you for doing your part by staying home and keeping with social distancing measures.

At this time, dentists in Alberta are only allowed to see emergency cases. This restriction was put in place by the provincial public health officials and the Alberta Dental Association and College (ADAC) to ensure your safety as well as ours.

We understand that this restriction is hard for some of you. Coming in for regular cleanings or when you feel a toothache is such a natural thing to do. We hope this guide can answer most of your questions about which dental emergencies we’re able to see during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dental Emergencies During COVID-19

Dental emergencies include oral-facial traumasignificant infection, prolonged bleeding, pain which cannot be managed by over the counter medications, or management of known/high-risk malignancy (oral cancer).

Oral-Facial Trauma includes a broken jaw or cheekbones, cuts in the mouth and face or other injuries from an accident. We made this guide to help you address dental emergencies as soon as they happen.

Prolonged Bleeding for longer than 20 minutes with constant pressure which can happen after a tooth was removed, trauma or cuts in the gum.

Painful toothaches that cannot be managed by over the counter pain relievers. If your pain persists after taking medication, please connect with us via email or phone. We’ll do what we can to help you within the provisions set by ADAC.

Oral cancer is always a priority. If you suspect your symptoms point to oral cancer or you have been diagnosed and you need to see us to manage your condition, we can help. Oral cancer’s survival rates depend on the timing of treatment. The earlier the better.

How Dental Emergencies are Handled at Skypointe Dental

STEP # 1 Dr. Patel will connect with you over the phone or email.
STEP # 2 He will then assess your symptoms, problems and photos you’ve emailed.
STEP # 3 You will be advised on your current problem and be given resolution options and timing

  • For pain over the counter pain medication (Ibuprofen and/or Tylenol), following the manufacturers’ maximum doses. Both can be taken concurrently but Dr. Patel suggests staggering every 3 hours if both are needed.
  • Antibiotics may be prescribed for infections if required

STEP # 4 If the measures listed in #3 are of no help, Dr. Patel will discuss further steps and options for in-office treatment. We suggest patients stay in touch via email to keep us updated on any changes.

STEP # 5 In the office, the use of drills will be avoided unless absolutely necessary to resolve pain or infections. This includes root canal treatment and cavities. Extractions are an option if required.

This protocol abides closely with the ADAC’s treatment guide to emergencies during COVID-19. To ensure your comfort and your safety, we will do what we can to ease your pain right away.

Extra steps we’re taking for your safety

Our sanitation measures have always been designed to keep you and your family safe. During this time, Skypointe Dental is taking extra steps including:

  • Only 1 patient in the office at a time is allowed and will be asked to sign additional COVID-19 consents and symptom testing.
  • Only 1 patient per dental room per day.
  • We thoroughly wipe all touched surfaces after each patient including counters, door handles etc. in addition to our routine sanitation measures.
  • All our team members are required to routinely wash our hands and ensure we’re well-stocked with hand sanitizers.
  • We rotate our staff and make sure we are abiding by all social distancing measures and hygiene while at home and if we are required to go to public spaces (ex. groceries). We also monitor ourselves for symptoms.
  • All our team members are required to wear masks at all times.
